Professor Carter Nnamdi Dike Umeoduagu, the Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, has died at the age of 44.
Umeoduagu had served as Acting Vice-Chancellor for about two months before he was formally inaugurated as the substantive Vice-Chancellor on October 2, 2026. He took over the acting role after the former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eugene Nwadialor, proceeded on medical leave.
However, tragedy struck just a day after his inauguration. Reports said the professor suddenly took ill after the ceremony and died on Saturday, October 3.
The university has not yet publicly disclosed the medical cause of his death. Its Board of Trustees has instead constituted a five-member investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the death and review the forthcoming autopsy report.
The Chancellor of the university, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. E.S.C. Obiorah, said the autopsy would help establish the actual cause of death.
Umeoduagu was a Professor of Microbiology and had previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, at Tansian University. He was also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, representing Aguata I Constituency.
The university has declared two weeks of mourning, postponed academic activities and lowered its flag in honour of the late academic.
As of the latest reports, the exact cause of his sudden death remains unknown pending the outcome of the autopsy.
