The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has called for the prompt release of outstanding funds required for the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections.
The commission said adequate and timely funding was critical to effective planning, procurement, logistics, technology deployment and security arrangements ahead of the polls.
INEC had proposed about N873.78 billion for the 2027 elections. Although more than N500 billion was released in June, about N371 billion remained outstanding as of late September, according to reports.
The commission warned that delays in releasing the remaining funds could affect the procurement of electoral materials, replacement of damaged or missing BVAS devices, transportation, personnel deployment and other preparations.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, stressed that election logistics and security required sustained financial support, noting that inadequate resources could undermine otherwise effective election security arrangements.
The commission has also continued preparations for the elections, including technology audits, procurement planning, voter education and preparations for testing its electoral systems.
INEC is scheduled to conduct the presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
