Public servants under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council have issued a three day warning strike notice to the Federal Government over the rising price of petrol and worsening economic hardship.
The council said the strike would begin on October 2, 2026, if the government fails to address its demands by September 30.
The workers are demanding that the price of Premium Motor Spirit be reduced to N500 per litre, alongside an immediate wage award to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
They are also calling for the commencement of negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027.
The council, which comprises eight public sector unions, said the current petrol prices, reported to range from about N1,450 to N2,000 per litre in some areas and as high as N2,500 in locations outside major cities, had placed severe pressure on workers and their families.
The workers said reducing fuel costs would help ease transportation expenses and the prices of essential goods and services.
The Nigeria Labour Congress has also backed the demands, describing the call for a wage award and lower petrol prices as measures aimed at addressing the impact of the rising cost of living.
The JNPSNC warned that failure by the government to act before the September 30 deadline would leave workers with no option but to commence the planned strike.
