Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has said Manchester City players should throw away their medals if the club is stripped of titles following its guilty verdict over breaches of Premier League financial rules.
The Premier League found City guilty of financial rule breaches covering a nine year period between 2009 and 2018. The club, however, continues to deny wrongdoing and is expected to appeal the decision.
Keane, speaking on ITV Sport, said he would throw away the medals if he were one of the players involved, arguing that the achievements had been affected by the financial misconduct.
City won eight trophies during the period under investigation, including three Premier League titles. Sanctions have not yet been announced, but possible punishments could include fines, points deductions or the removal of titles.
Keane also said the situation would be difficult for the players and manager as the club deals with the consequences of the ruling.
Former City opponents have expressed differing views. Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney said he would not want United to receive a Premier League title retrospectively if City were stripped of one, saying his former side had finished second and had not done enough to win that season.
