The summit comes as Washington and Beijing continue to manage disputes over tariffs, technology restrictions and access to advanced semiconductors. Their previous meeting in Beijing in May produced discussions on “strategic stability”, but did not resolve several major differences.
AI has emerged as an increasingly important part of the relationship. Both countries are competing to expand their capabilities in artificial intelligence while restricting access to technologies considered strategically sensitive. US and Chinese officials have also discussed establishing a bilateral AI dialogue focused on incidents with potential national-security implications.
Trade is another major issue, with both sides seeking greater stability after months of tariff disputes. Discussions are expected to include tariffs, agricultural purchases, non-tariff barriers and the future of the existing trade truce. Rare-earth supplies and advanced technology are also central to the economic relationship.
Taiwan and other geopolitical issues are expected to feature alongside economic matters. Analysts cited in recent coverage caution that expectations for major agreements remain limited, although the meeting could provide an opportunity to manage tensions between Washington and Beijing.
