Optimus Bank has mobilised its employees, volunteers and community stakeholders for a beach clean-up exercise in Lekki, Lagos, as part of efforts to combat coastal pollution and promote environmental responsibility.
The exercise, held to mark World Cleanup Day 2026, took place at a beach location off the Coastal Road and was organised in partnership with Shoreline Euphoria Limited and RESWAYE.
Participants collected approximately two tonnes of waste and marine litter from the shoreline, including plastic bottles, sachet-water nylon, food packaging, cans, glass and other solid waste.
The waste was separated into recyclable and non-recyclable materials. Recyclable items were directed towards recycling and resource-recovery channels, while residual waste was evacuated through proper disposal arrangements in partnership with the Lagos State Waste Management Agency.
The initiative is part of Optimus Bank’s “PROTECT OUR COAST” campaign and its wider “Impact Starts with Us” platform, which supports activities focused on environmental sustainability, education, healthcare and community empowerment.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Optimus Bank, Dr Ademola Odeyemi, said protecting the environment was part of the bank’s responsibility to the communities it serves.
He said the initiative was intended to encourage individuals, businesses and communities to work together in addressing environmental challenges.
The programme also featured awareness sessions on plastic pollution, marine litter and responsible waste disposal. Participants were introduced to waste segregation and recycling practices, while beach users, residents and other community stakeholders were engaged on ways to reduce pollution.
The bank said the campaign is designed to encourage environmental responsibility beyond a single clean-up exercise, with emphasis on everyday choices around plastic use, waste disposal and the protection of shared spaces.
