Fintech engineers have identified network instability, payment gateway disruptions and communication failures between banks and digital payment platforms as some of the major reasons online transactions fail in Nigeria.
The engineers said failed transactions are not always caused by the customer’s bank or insufficient funds. In many cases, a payment can break down at different points between the customer, bank, payment processor and merchant.
Poor network connectivity can interrupt communication during payment processing, while overloaded or temporarily unavailable banking and payment systems can also result in failed or pending transactions.
Authentication problems, including delays in receiving one-time passwords, can further prevent transactions from being completed within the required time.
The rapid expansion of digital payments has increased the volume of transactions passing through Nigeria’s financial technology infrastructure, making reliability and system interoperability increasingly important.
Industry experts have previously identified network and technical failures as significant challenges affecting digital payments, while the country’s growing dependence on electronic transactions has increased pressure on banks, telecommunications companies and payment processors to maintain stable systems.
Engineers said improving infrastructure, strengthening connections between financial institutions and payment platforms, and providing clearer communication when failures occur would help reduce customer frustration.
They also stressed the importance of efficient transaction-reversal systems to ensure customers whose accounts are debited during unsuccessful transactions receive their funds promptly.
