Former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died in the United Kingdom at the age of 77.
Idris reportedly died on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately clear.
Following the news of his death, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Abdullahi Bello, and other government officials visited his residence in Abuja to condole with his family.
Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2012 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He was re-elected in 2007 and completed his tenure in January 2012, after which Captain Idris Wada succeeded him.
His death has prompted tributes from political associates and prominent figures in Kogi State. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan described him as a significant figure in the political history of Kogi State and the PDP.
Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo also mourned the former governor and announced a three-day mourning period, while stating that Idris would receive a state burial.
Idris, popularly known as Ibro, was born in 1949 in Idah, Kogi State. Before entering politics, he was involved in business, with interests including construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality.
