Arsenal needed a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Smilla Holmberg to salvage a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, while United secured their first point of the Women’s Super League season.
Manchester United arrived having lost their opening two league matches under new manager Eva Olid, but produced a disciplined performance that frustrated Arsenal for long periods.
Arsenal controlled much of the early possession and created several promising openings, but United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce was repeatedly called upon to keep the hosts at bay.
Despite Arsenal’s pressure, the visitors grew in confidence as the match progressed and began to threaten on the counter.
United eventually took the lead in the 67th minute after a defensive error from Arsenal. Julia Zigiotti Olme reacted quickly to the mistake, won possession and calmly finished beyond Misa Rodríguez.
The goal forced Arsenal to increase the pressure as they searched for a response.
Renée Slegers introduced fresh attacking options from the bench, including Holmberg, Kim Little, Caitlin Foord and Chloe Kelly, as Arsenal pushed United deeper into their own half.
Tullis-Joyce continued to make important saves, and United appeared increasingly close to securing a first league victory of the campaign.
However, Arsenal refused to give up.
With the match deep into stoppage time, Leah Williamson delivered a lofted ball towards the far post. Holmberg arrived at the right moment and converted from close range in the 94th minute to rescue a point for the hosts.
The equaliser extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run but represented another frustrating result after last weekend’s goalless draw against Crystal Palace.
Arsenal have now taken five points from their opening three league matches, scoring only twice during that period.
For Manchester United, the draw offered encouragement after their difficult opening fortnight. Olid’s side showed greater defensive organisation and attacking discipline than in their first two league outings, although the late concession denied them a first win.
The result leaves both teams looking for greater consistency as the WSL season develops. Arsenal will now turn their attention to European competition before a difficult league meeting with Chelsea, while Manchester United will look to build on their first point when they return to league action.
