Arteta Admits Brighton Deserved Victory as Arsenal Suffer Heavy Defeat

Mikel Arteta admitted Arsenal were given a “big lesson” after the reigning Premier League champions suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Arsenal arrived on the south coast with a perfect league record, but Brighton produced an aggressive and disciplined display that left the visitors struggling to impose their usual style.

Pascal Gross opened the scoring after 31 minutes, finding the net with a well-placed strike from outside the penalty area after Arsenal failed to close him down.

Brighton continued to dominate the contest and doubled their advantage just before half-time. Charalampos Kostoulas collected the ball around 25 yards from goal before firing into the bottom corner to leave Arsenal facing a difficult second half.

The Gunners struggled to respond after the interval and Brighton extended their lead in the 57th minute. Chema Andrés rose at the far post to head home from Gross’ corner, putting the hosts three goals ahead.

Brighton had opportunities to score even more, while Arsenal found it difficult to create a sustained attacking threat. The result ended Arsenal’s seven-match winning run across all competitions and handed them their first league defeat of the campaign.

Arteta acknowledged after the match that his team had been second best in several key areas.

He said Arsenal had failed to win enough individual duels and second balls, while technical errors when attempting to play out from the back repeatedly placed them under pressure.

“We were extremely disappointed,” Arteta said, while also acknowledging that Brighton deserved the victory.

The defeat was particularly significant because Arsenal had been attempting to match a club record by winning eight successive matches at the start of a season.

Brighton, meanwhile, continued an impressive run of form. Fabian Hürzeler’s side moved into third place and have now established themselves among the Premier League’s highest-scoring teams.

For Arsenal, the result provides a sharp setback after an impressive opening to their title defence. The champions now face a lengthy international break before returning to league action.

Arteta will hope the break gives his players time to address the weaknesses exposed at Brighton and respond when the Premier League resumes.
