Protests erupted in Minna, Niger State, after at least 33 people detained during raids on suspected illegal gold mines were found dead in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The detainees were arrested during operations in the Wushishi Lukoto area between September 15 and 16. The NSCDC initially suggested a possible disease outbreak but later said the cause of death had not been established and would be determined through medical examinations.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji Ojo suspended the Niger State NSCDC commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, pending an investigation.
Residents said youths protested in Minna on Thursday night, demanding justice, with some vehicles reportedly damaged. The city was calm by Friday morning as security forces increased their presence.
Nigeria has long struggled to curb illegal mining, which authorities say causes environmental damage and reduces government revenue.
