Chinese embodied AI company Spirit AI expects humanoid robot intelligence to make a major breakthrough by mid 2027, but says widespread use in homes could still be at least eight years away.
The company said advances in robot hardware have been rapid, but developing software capable of handling complex real world tasks remains the biggest challenge. Spirit AI co founder Gao Yang said robots could begin wider industrial use within the next two years, followed by simpler commercial applications.
Spirit AI has deployed dozens of its Moz1 robots at battery maker CATL and retailer JD.com. The 300 person company has raised more than $670 million since its 2024 launch and is valued at about 20 billion yuan ($2.9 billion).
The company relies heavily on real world data to train its robots, employing about 1,000 contractors to record human movements in homes and factories. Gao said the shortage of high quality training data remains a major obstacle to developing more capable robot brains.
