Amazon has entered the growing debate over artificial intelligence safety, saying AI models should be released only after rigorous testing and the introduction of strong safeguards.
“We don’t see it as a choice between progress and safety,” an Amazon spokesperson told Reuters. “Models should be released when they’re ready and safe to use.”
The comments come as leading AI companies face growing pressure to slow the pace of development amid concerns that increasingly capable systems could pose risks beyond human control. Amazon, however, stopped short of endorsing a broader slowdown.
The company said the technology industry should work with governments to establish appropriate protections, adding that managing AI risks would require collective action.
Amazon develops AI models through Amazon Web Services and its artificial general intelligence unit, while also providing infrastructure and access to competing AI models through its Bedrock platform.
The company had largely remained quiet on the existential AI safety debate until now. Its comments follow calls from executives at Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Microsoft for a more measured approach to AI development.
