The Nigerian Guild of Editors has raised concerns over the alleged harassment and intimidation of journalists, urging authorities and political actors to protect press freedom and ensure a safe environment for media professionals ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The guild called for greater respect for the rights of journalists to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without fear of intimidation, assault or unlawful interference.
It also urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to promote peaceful democratic engagement and respect the role of the media in providing voters with accurate and relevant information.
The editors emphasised the need for the 2027 elections to be conducted in a free, fair and credible manner, stressing that journalists should be allowed to report on electoral activities without obstruction.
The concerns come as political activities are expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with the media likely to play a central role in informing the public and scrutinising political campaigns.
The Guild called on security agencies and other relevant authorities to investigate reported cases of journalist harassment and ensure that media practitioners can perform their duties safely.
