Securing the 2027 Elections Requires a Convergence of Physical and Cyber Defences

Nigeria’s 2027 general elections will require stronger coordination between physical security measures and cybersecurity systems to protect the electoral process from emerging threats.

The increasing use of digital platforms in elections has created new vulnerabilities, including cyberattacks, misinformation, data breaches and attempts to disrupt election-related systems. At the same time, traditional threats such as violence, ballot box snatching, intimidation and attacks on election personnel remain major concerns.

Experts have therefore stressed the need for security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission and relevant technology institutions to work together before, during and after the elections.

They said protecting electoral infrastructure should go beyond securing polling units and election materials, as digital systems used for voter registration, result transmission and communication must also be adequately protected.

They called for regular cybersecurity assessments, stronger protection of sensitive electoral data, rapid response mechanisms and improved training for election officials and security personnel.

The experts also urged authorities to strengthen public awareness campaigns to help voters identify false information and manipulated content capable of creating tension during the election period.

They maintained that a secure election depends on both physical safety and digital resilience, warning that weaknesses in either area could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

With preparations for the 2027 elections expected to intensify, stakeholders have been urged to adopt an integrated security strategy capable of addressing both conventional and cyber threats.
