Traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex have protested the alleged expansion of Chinese merchants into retail trading, arguing that the development is putting pressure on Nigerian-owned businesses operating within the market.
The protest took place on Monday at markets located within the Trade Fair Complex along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, where traders expressed concern over what they described as increasing competition from Chinese businesses selling directly to consumers.
The traders alleged that some Chinese merchants who initially operated mainly as wholesalers had expanded into retail, allowing them to sell directly to customers who traditionally bought goods from Nigerian retailers.
They argued that the practice gives the foreign businesses a significant pricing advantage because of their direct access to manufacturers and suppliers in China.
Some protesters said Chinese businesses had rented shops and established warehouses within the complex, while also approaching customers directly to sell goods. They claimed that this had contributed to declining sales for local retailers.
The traders stressed that their protest was directed at the alleged retail activities and not against Chinese nationals or their businesses generally. They called for the authorities and market leadership to establish clearer arrangements governing the activities of foreign merchants within the complex.
The protest was later suspended following intervention by the leadership of the Traders Association, local government officials and security agencies.
The Secretary of the Traders Association at the complex, Juventus Okpala-Okaka, said the association had already received complaints from youths over the activities of Chinese merchants and had constituted a committee to investigate the concerns.
He said representatives of the protesting traders were subsequently invited to meet with the association’s leadership and were encouraged to suspend the protest while the matter was being examined.
The traders were also asked to nominate between 30 and 50 representatives to work with the committee and association executives in finding a resolution to the dispute.
The Lagos State Police Command later described the demonstration as a minor protest and said the situation at the complex was peaceful. Security officials also held discussions with market leaders, local government representatives and members of the Chinese business community.
The development has brought renewed attention to the competition between local retailers and foreign businesses in Nigeria’s commercial centres, particularly where foreign-owned enterprises participate in both wholesale and retail activities.
For the affected traders, the issue goes beyond individual businesses and concerns the sustainability of the distribution system through which Nigerian wholesalers and retailers earn their livelihoods.
The dispute also highlights the broader challenge of balancing foreign investment and commercial participation with the interests of local businesses and the need for fair competition in Nigeria’s retail market.
Further discussions involving the traders’ association, Chinese businesses, government representatives and security authorities are expected to determine how the concerns raised by the protesters will be addressed.
