Calvin Bassey delivered a commanding defensive performance at Anfield on Saturday as Fulham held Liverpool to a goalless draw, earning their first Premier League point of the season while further strengthening the Nigeria international’s growing reputation.
Wearing the captain’s armband, Bassey played the full 90 minutes and stood firm as Fulham frustrated Liverpool’s attack throughout the contest.
The 26-year-old centre-back won all three of his ground duels, made three recoveries, one interception and five clearances, while completing 82 per cent of his passes.
His display earned him the second-highest rating among Fulham players and the highest mark of the club’s defenders as the visitors secured a valuable point against a Liverpool side that created opportunities but could not find a way through.
The result was particularly significant for Fulham, who had suffered defeats in each of their opening three league matches. The Cottagers lost 3-2 to both Chelsea and Crystal Palace before a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland.
Bassey had already warned ahead of the trip to Merseyside that Fulham faced a difficult challenge against a Liverpool team he considered one of the best in the Premier League.
“It is not going to be easy. You know what is coming when you play Liverpool, they have top players,” Bassey said before the match.
“It is just about doing our homework and seeing how we can hurt them. We talk with the manager about everything that might not have worked, and try and go into every game understanding more what he wants from us individually as players.”
That calmness and maturity have become hallmarks of Bassey’s development since he began his football journey in England.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Bassey moved to England as a child and grew up in Newham, London. He joined Leicester City’s academy and spent three seasons there without making a senior appearance before moving to Rangers in 2020.
The switch to Scotland proved a major turning point.
Capable of operating at both left-back and centre-back, Bassey helped Rangers win the Scottish Premiership by 25 points during his first season, with the club completing an unbeaten league campaign and conceding just 13 goals.
Rangers also recorded 26 clean sheets, a Scottish record, during that campaign.
Bassey continued to impress the following season, helping Rangers reach the Europa League final. Although the Glasgow side eventually lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Bassey’s pace, strength and composure attracted significant attention from clubs across Europe.
Ajax subsequently signed him for an initial €23 million, making him the most expensive sale in Rangers’ history.
In Amsterdam, Bassey made 39 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and providing five assists, while also making his Champions League debut.
Fulham then brought him to the Premier League in July 2023 in a four-year deal reportedly worth €21 million, making him the most expensive Nigerian defender at the time.
Bassey scored his first Fulham goal in February 2024 during a memorable 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, the club’s first win at the stadium since 2003.
His performances have continued to improve, with Bassey being named Fulham’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign after finishing runner-up the previous year.
He made 30 Premier League appearances last season and has now played 105 matches for Fulham in all competitions, scoring four goals and registering one assist.
His development has also been reflected on the international stage. Bassey has become an important part of the Super Eagles setup and was involved in Nigeria’s squads that finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and third at the 2025 tournament.
At Fulham, new manager Alvaro Arbeloa handed Bassey the captaincy ahead of the current campaign following the injury to Tom Cairney. He has worn the armband in each of the club’s opening four Premier League matches.
The defender has embraced the responsibility.
“It is a privilege. Being able to captain this club is unbelievable,” Bassey said.
“Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone, so I just be myself and try to help everyone.”
His performances have also attracted attention from Italy, with Serie A giants Inter Milan reportedly monitoring his situation.
Inter manager Cristian Chivu is understood to regard the left-footed defender as a potential fit for his tactical system, particularly because of his ability to operate both as a centre-back in a back three and at left-back.
The Italian champions are looking to refresh a defence containing several ageing players and have reportedly tracked Bassey across multiple transfer windows.
Bassey’s current Fulham contract runs until the summer of 2027, with the club holding an option for an additional year. Reports suggest Fulham are considering opening negotiations over a new long-term deal as they look to fend off potential interest from Inter.
For now, however, Bassey’s focus remains firmly on Fulham’s recovery after their difficult start and on his responsibilities with Nigeria, with crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures approaching.
His commanding display at Anfield could prove another significant step in a career that continues to attract attention at the highest level.
