Nigeria’s imports of passenger cars rose sharply in the first half of 2026, reaching N1.18 trillion, representing a 145.6 per cent increase compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
The surge highlights the continued strong demand for imported vehicles despite rising costs and economic pressures affecting consumers and businesses.
The increase also underscores Nigeria’s heavy reliance on imported automobiles and the growing cost of meeting vehicle demand through foreign markets.
The development is expected to renew discussions around local vehicle production, import policies and measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s automotive industry.
