AfD Faces Tough Coalition Talks After Election Victory

Germany’s far right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is searching for allies to form a government in Saxony Anhalt after winning a record result but falling short of an outright majority.

AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund, 35, said talks were underway with the far left BSW party and individual members of other parties to find enough support for a stable government.

The AfD won 39 of the 83 seats in the state parliament, leaving it short of the majority Siegmund had hoped for.

The BSW, which holds five seats, is open to cooperation but wants an independent state premier rather than an AfD led coalition. Siegmund has rejected that condition.

Other mainstream parties, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats, have ruled out cooperation with the AfD under Germany’s political firewall strategy. However, divisions within the CDU could potentially create opportunities for defections, although no confirmed defections have emerged.

Siegmund said the AfD would seek to form a government as soon as possible but did not rule out a new election if talks fail
