India’s Wipro says its artificial intelligence initiatives have created productivity gains equivalent to the work of about 20,000 employees, who have since been redeployed within the company.
Chief Technology Officer Sandhya Arun said Wipro is adopting a “human AI operating model,” with more than 100,000 employees trained and certified in advanced AI skills. The company had about 243,000 employees as of June.
Arun said the productivity gains do not necessarily mean workers are being replaced by AI. Instead, employees can manage multiple AI agents, move to other projects or take on new roles.
Wipro is also expanding its pool of engineers who work directly with clients to accelerate AI adoption, although Arun did not give a specific target.
The comments come as India’s $315 billion IT services industry adjusts to AI, which is changing hiring patterns, software development and client contracts. Rivals including Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys are also expanding their AI focused workforces.
Wipro does not disclose revenue generated from AI. Analysts say the company remains in an early stage of turning its AI investments into revenue and improved profit margins.
