Global investment in clean hydrogen projects has exceeded $130 billion as governments increasingly see the fuel as important for energy security, industrial growth and emissions reduction.
The Hydrogen Council said more than 570 committed projects are expected to support about 6.9 million metric tons of clean hydrogen production annually. About 90% of the projects are already under construction or operating.
China accounts for more than half of the world’s committed renewable hydrogen capacity, while Europe ranks second in investment. The United States leads in low carbon hydrogen deployment.
The council said policies already in place could support 6 million tons of annual hydrogen demand by 2030, with another 5 million tons possible if governments fully implement existing measures.
However, high production costs and weak demand remain major challenges. Several green hydrogen developers have delayed or cancelled projects, while industries such as steelmaking and long distance transport have struggled with the high cost of switching to hydrogen.
