A 22 year old Singaporean man has pleaded guilty in the United States to helping orchestrate the theft of more than $245 million in Bitcoin from a Washington DC resident, in what authorities described as one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in US history.

Malone Lam pleaded guilty to a federal racketeering conspiracy charge after prosecutors accused him of leading a network of young men involved in cryptocurrency scams dating back to 2023.

The massive theft occurred in August 2024 when Lam and his associates allegedly used sophisticated social engineering techniques to gain access to the victim’s cryptocurrency holdings. Members of the group reportedly posed as representatives of Google and the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange and manipulated the victim into revealing access credentials and security information.

The information enabled the group to gain control of more than 4,100 Bitcoin, which was valued at over $245 million at the time of the theft.

After obtaining the cryptocurrency, the group allegedly went to great lengths to launder the proceeds and conceal their activities. Prosecutors said Lam and his associates converted portions of the stolen cryptocurrency into cash and used the money to finance an extravagant lifestyle.

The spending reportedly included more than 30 luxury vehicles, expensive watches, private jets, rented mansions and lavish entertainment. Lam was also accused of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars at a Los Angeles nightclub in a single night.

The FBI eventually tracked the group down, with Lam arrested in Miami in September 2024. His arrest came after investigators uncovered evidence linking him to the cryptocurrency operation and its spending activities.

Lam is one of 18 people charged in connection with the wider investigation and the 11th defendant to plead guilty.

The case highlights the growing sophistication of cryptocurrency related cybercrime, particularly the use of social engineering to manipulate victims into surrendering access to digital assets.

Unlike traditional hacking methods that rely primarily on exploiting software vulnerabilities, social engineering attacks often target people directly by creating convincing situations that persuade victims to disclose passwords, security codes or other sensitive information.

Lam now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison under the federal racketeering conspiracy charge. A sentencing date has not yet been fixed.

The prosecution of the case is expected to remain significant for US authorities as they continue efforts to combat large scale cryptocurrency theft and money laundering.

With billions of dollars now held in digital assets around the world, law enforcement agencies have increasingly focused on tracking stolen cryptocurrency, identifying the individuals behind sophisticated scams and recovering funds moved through digital platforms.

The case also serves as a warning to cryptocurrency holders about the risks posed by social engineering attacks, in which criminals can bypass sophisticated digital security systems by manipulating individuals with legitimate access to their accounts.
