Moroccan Woman at Centre of Social Media Dispute Has Been in Morocco Since April, Lawyer Says

A Moroccan woman, Khadija Diab, whose husband, Nasiru Idris Musa, has made claims about her whereabouts on social media, has been in Morocco since April 2026 and is currently with her family, her lawyer, Bilkisu Abdulrasheed Chedi, has said.

Chedi, Executive Director of Women Aware of Rights Initiative, dismissed claims that Khadija is being kept by Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, describing the allegation as false and unfounded.

According to the lawyer, Khadija returned to Morocco in April after the organisation helped her obtain an emergency travel document following the alleged seizure of her international passport by her husband.

Chedi explained the circumstances surrounding the case in a video shared on Gumi’s verified Facebook page amid the controversy generated by Khadija’s husband on social media.

She said Khadija’s family confirmed that she arrived safely in Morocco and had been staying with them since her return.

“So all the allegations that she has been with Sheikh Gumi are false and unfounded because it’s not possible for a person to be in two different countries at the same time,” she said.

Chedi said Khadija first approached Women Aware of Rights Initiative in October 2025, alleging serious domestic abuse, inadequate feeding and maintenance, as well as what she described as an unlawful and unnatural conjugal relationship.

The lawyer said the organisation advised Khadija to undergo medical examinations following her allegations, adding that the results indicated that she had contracted sexually transmitted diseases.

According to Chedi, Khadija subsequently expressed her desire to leave the marriage, citing alleged emotional and physical abuse.

She said the organisation then commenced legal proceedings on Khadija’s behalf at the Area Sharia Court on Daura Road in Kaduna, with the case first mentioned on October 3, 2025.

The matter was later adjourned to November 11, 2025, after the husband’s lawyer filed a motion seeking reconciliation.

Chedi said the legal process was subsequently delayed after the defendant changed lawyers and the new counsel challenged the jurisdiction of the court.

She added that the case was further affected by the absence of lawyers from court and a judicial strike in Kaduna.

According to the lawyer, Khadija eventually became emotionally distressed over the prolonged legal process and expressed a desire to return to Morocco.

Chedi said the situation became complicated because Khadija’s international passport was allegedly in her husband’s possession. The organisation therefore assisted her in securing an emergency travel document from the Kingdom of Morocco.

She said Moroccan immigration authorities later confirmed Khadija’s safe arrival in the country, while the Moroccan Embassy in Nigeria also informed the organisation that she had arrived.

Before leaving Nigeria, Chedi said Khadija delegated her to continue pursuing the legal proceedings on her behalf.

The lawyer explained that the case at the Daura Road Sharia Court was discontinued on June 10, 2026. Another case was subsequently filed in July seeking the dissolution of the marriage under Sharia law.

Chedi urged members of the public to disregard allegations that Khadija was being kept by Gumi, saying her statement was intended to clarify the circumstances surrounding the woman’s whereabouts and the ongoing controversy.

She maintained that Khadija is currently in Morocco with her family and that the claims linking her to the Islamic scholar have no basis.
