Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has commissioned basic education infrastructure and other educational interventions across the state’s 23 local government areas as part of his administration’s human capital development agenda.
The projects were commissioned at Sultan Bello Primary School in Unguwan Sarki, Kaduna North Local Government Area, with Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe representing the governor at the event.
Sani said investment in basic education was essential because primary schools provide the foundation for literacy, numeracy, reasoning, discipline and other skills needed for a child’s development.
According to the governor, his administration has constructed or rehabilitated 3,267 classrooms, built 2,232 toilet facilities and provided 180 hand-pump boreholes to improve learning conditions and access to clean water.
He also disclosed that 87 science laboratories, 29 computer centres and 81,540 sets of furniture had been provided across the state.
In addition, four bilingual education schools have been delivered in Igabi, Zaria, Kubau and Giwa in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission and the Islamic Development Bank. The schools provide 192 classrooms with capacity for about 7,680 learners, particularly children who are out of school.
The governor further said 545,748 teaching and learning materials had been distributed, while 33,137 teachers, head teachers and School Support Officers had received training in areas including computer skills, classroom management, literacy, numeracy and school management.
The Commissioner for Education, Abubakar Sani Sambo, also disclosed that the state had reviewed the minimum wage for primary school teachers from N38,000 to N72,000 and released N548 million to retired teachers under the NUT Endwell Scheme.
The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board also announced the commissioning of 1.1 million teaching and learning materials, 18 smart boards, 55 motorcycles and three golf carts to strengthen teaching, digital learning and monitoring of schools across the state.
