Solar Power Cuts Universities’ Energy Costs as FG Expands Off Grid Projects

The Federal Government has said the deployment of dedicated solar power systems across Nigerian universities is helping to reduce energy costs while providing more reliable electricity for teaching, research and other essential campus activities.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the government was moving to reduce universities’ dependence on the national grid through off grid solar solutions being deployed under the Energising Education Programme.

According to the minister, the initiative is aimed at addressing the long standing electricity challenges that have placed a heavy financial burden on tertiary institutions and disrupted academic activities.

Alausa said unreliable electricity supply had affected universities in several ways, including increasing their dependence on diesel generators and putting pressure on institutional finances.

He noted that universities require stable electricity not only for classrooms and student accommodation but also for laboratories, research facilities and hospitals attached to some institutions.

The minister said the government’s approach was to provide dedicated solar mini grids capable of supplying electricity to campuses without relying entirely on the conventional transmission network.

He explained that reducing dependence on the national grid would provide universities with greater control over their electricity supply and reduce the disruptions caused by frequent power outages.

Alausa said the cost of electricity had become one of the major financial pressures confronting university administrators, with substantial sums being spent on power bills and alternative energy sources.

He argued that resources that would ordinarily be spent on electricity and diesel could instead be directed towards improving academic facilities, expanding faculties, purchasing research equipment and upgrading other infrastructure.

The minister said the government was also concerned about the long term sustainability of the solar projects and had therefore established the Renewable Energy Asset Management Company as a special purpose vehicle to oversee and maintain the renewable energy assets deployed to educational institutions.

He stressed that the objective was not merely to install solar infrastructure but to ensure that the facilities remained functional for years after their deployment.

The move comes as the Federal Government continues to seek solutions to Nigeria’s electricity challenges, particularly in critical public institutions where unreliable power supply can directly affect service delivery.

For universities, access to dependable electricity is particularly important as institutions increasingly rely on digital learning platforms, research equipment, data systems and other technology driven services.

The government’s expansion of renewable energy solutions in tertiary institutions is therefore expected to provide both financial and operational benefits while supporting efforts to improve the quality of education and research.

Alausa said reliable and self sustaining electricity was central to the government’s broader human capital development agenda and its ambition of positioning Nigerian universities as competitive centres for research, innovation and economic development.

The Federal Government is expected to continue expanding renewable energy infrastructure across educational institutions as part of efforts to build a more dependable and sustainable power system for the sector.
