Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel, just three days after the death of his father, the former monarch, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.
The appointment was announced on Sunday by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Bala Ibrahim, following consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council, the traditional kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
Lawan succeeds his father, who died in Cairo, Egypt, on September 3 after nearly 46 years on the throne. The late monarch, who was the 16th Emir of Gumel, had ascended the throne in December 1980 and remained one of Nigeria’s longest serving traditional rulers.
The new Emir previously served as the Ciroman Gumel, a position that gave him considerable experience within the traditional institution and familiarity with the affairs of the emirate.
Before his appointment, Lawan also served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency, bringing a background in technology and public service to the traditional stool.
The state government said his selection followed the established traditional process and was based on recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
Governor Namadi commended the traditional authorities involved in the selection process and expressed confidence in the new monarch’s ability to provide leadership at a time of transition for the emirate.
The governor also called on residents and stakeholders across Gumel Emirate to support the new Emir and work with him to promote peace, unity and development.
The appointment comes shortly after the death of the former Emir, whose long reign was widely associated with stability and continuity within the Gumel traditional institution.
The transition is therefore being closely watched by residents of the emirate, particularly as the new monarch takes over an institution with deep historical and cultural significance in Jigawa State.
The government said it would present the staff of office to the new Emir at a later date in a ceremony befitting his position.
Lawan’s emergence also marks a continuation of the family’s connection with the Gumel throne, with the new monarch now assuming responsibility for an institution his father led for almost five decades.
The new Emir is expected to build on the legacy of his predecessor while using his experience in traditional leadership and public service to address the contemporary challenges facing the emirate.
For Gumel, the appointment closes a brief period of uncertainty following the death of the former monarch and begins a new chapter under a successor already familiar with the customs, institutions and aspirations of the people.
