Tropical Mosquito Breeds in East London for First Time in UK

An invasive tropical mosquito capable of transmitting dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses has been found breeding in residential properties in east London, marking the first confirmed breeding of the species in the United Kingdom.

The mosquito, known as Aedes aegypti, was detected through the UK Health Security Agency’s Mosquito Watch surveillance programme. Adult mosquitoes and larvae were found at homes in the area, prompting health officials to increase surveillance and trapping operations.

The discovery is the fourth time the species has been detected in the UK in recent years, but previous findings had not shown evidence that the mosquitoes were reproducing locally.

Despite the development, the UKHSA said the risk to the public remains very low. There is currently no evidence that the mosquitoes found in east London have infected anyone, while no mosquitoes or larvae have been detected in nearby public areas.

The agency also said the species was not considered established in Britain. Although recent heatwaves may have created conditions suitable for temporary breeding, the wider UK climate remains generally too cold for Aedes aegypti to survive and reproduce over the long term.

Aedes aegypti is normally associated with tropical and subtropical regions and is an important carrier of several viruses. In countries where those diseases circulate, bites from infected mosquitoes can transmit dengue, chikungunya and Zika.

The mosquito is particularly well adapted to living close to people and can breed in relatively small amounts of standing water. Its ability to travel through international trade and transport has allowed it to spread beyond its traditional range.

British health officials believe the mosquitoes found in east London were probably introduced accidentally. They can arrive in vehicles, luggage or imported plants and may survive if they encounter sufficiently warm conditions.

The finding comes amid growing concern about the effect of rising temperatures on the spread of invasive species. Warmer conditions are already allowing several mosquito species to expand their geographical range across Europe, bringing diseases once largely confined to tropical areas closer to northern populations.

The UK government has already recognised invasive Aedes mosquitoes as an increasing public health threat linked to climate change. Its national contingency plan sets out measures for surveillance, mosquito control and the response to locally acquired cases of diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika.

The plan also acknowledges that parts of south eastern England are becoming climatically suitable for invasive mosquitoes and that the area of potential suitability could expand as temperatures rise.

Following the east London discovery, control measures have been introduced to eliminate the larvae. Authorities will continue monitoring the area and searching for additional mosquitoes or breeding sites.

Residents have also been advised to remove stagnant water from gardens and outdoor spaces. Buckets, plant pots, containers, paddling pools and other objects capable of collecting water can provide breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Experts say the discovery should be treated as a warning rather than evidence of an immediate disease outbreak. The absence of human infections means the current health risk remains low, but continued surveillance will be important to prevent the species from becoming established.

The incident also highlights the growing challenge posed by climate change and global trade. As temperatures rise and international movement continues, species traditionally restricted to warmer parts of the world may increasingly find opportunities to survive in countries where they were previously unable to establish.

For British authorities, the priority is therefore to detect such incursions early, eliminate breeding populations and prevent a temporary introduction from developing into a permanent presence.
