UEFA is set to introduce special “debut patches” for players making their first-ever appearances in the UEFA Champions League during the 2026/27 season.
The new initiative is part of an agreement between UEFA and Fanatics and will see a small commemorative patch placed on the sleeve of every player making their Champions League debut.
The patch will feature the word “debut” incorporated into the competition’s iconic starball logo, giving first-time participants a unique memento of their milestone appearance.
UEFA announced the initiative on its official X account on Wednesday, explaining that the patch will not remain permanently on the player’s shirt.
“A special debut patch has been introduced for players making their first-ever #UCL appearance!” UEFA said.
After the match, the patch will be removed from the player’s jersey and transferred to Topps, the trading card company owned by Fanatics.
The patch will then be embedded into a unique, player-signed Topps trading card, with each card produced as a one-of-one collectible and authenticated before being released.
The initiative will also apply to players who begin a Champions League match on the bench but come on as substitutes and make their first appearance in the competition.
However, simply being included in a matchday squad will not be enough to qualify. Players who remain unused substitutes must wait until they actually feature in a Champions League match before receiving a debut patch.
The new scheme is designed to celebrate one of the most significant milestones in a footballer’s career while also creating a lasting collectible linked directly to the player’s first Champions League appearance.
With the 2026/27 Champions League season approaching, the debut patches are expected to give first-time participants and football collectors a distinctive reminder of the moment a player steps onto one of European club football’s biggest stages for the first time.
