The Nigeria Police Force has denied reports that its officers teargassed protesting pensioners in Lagos, insisting that a viral image circulating online was artificially generated. The clarification came after widespread outrage on social media, where the image appeared to show elderly pensioners being dispersed with tear gas during a demonstration.
According to a statement from the Lagos State Police Command, no such incident occurred. Officials explained that while pensioners did gather to press for payment of outstanding entitlements, the protest was peaceful and closely monitored by security operatives. The police emphasized that officers on duty ensured order without resorting to force.
The Command further noted that preliminary investigations revealed the viral image was created using artificial intelligence tools, designed to mislead the public and discredit law enforcement. Authorities warned against the spread of misinformation, stressing that such actions could incite unnecessary tension and undermine public trust.
Police spokespersons urged citizens to verify information before sharing, highlighting the dangers of manipulated content in the digital age. “We remain committed to protecting the rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, but we will not tolerate attempts to spread falsehoods that damage the credibility of the Force,” the statement read.
Civil society groups have reacted to the development, calling for greater transparency in handling protests and improved communication between authorities and the public. Analysts argue that the incident underscores the growing challenge of combating fake news and AI-generated content in Nigeria’s information space.
The pensioners, meanwhile, reiterated their demands for prompt payment of arrears, urging the government to prioritize their welfare. They expressed relief that the protest was peaceful but called for sustained dialogue to address their grievances.
