Manchester City midfielder Claudio Echeverri is set to join Portuguese giants Benfica on loan after an agreement was reached between the two clubs for the Argentine youngster.

The deal, which is understood to include an option for Benfica to buy Echeverri in June 2027, will see the highly rated midfielder spend the coming season in Portugal as he continues his development away from the Premier League champions.

According to the latest transfer update, Manchester City will cover 100 per cent of Echeverri’s salary throughout the loan spell.

The 20-year-old Argentine, widely known by his nickname “El Diablito,” is expected to travel to Portugal on Tuesday to undergo his medical examination before completing the move.

Transfer journalist César Luis Merlo had earlier reported that the two clubs were closing in on an agreement for the temporary transfer.

Echeverri joined Manchester City from River Plate after emerging as one of Argentina’s most promising young talents. His creativity, close control and ability to operate between midfield and attack have made him a highly regarded prospect.

However, with competition for places at the Etihad Stadium remaining intense, a loan move is viewed as an opportunity for Echeverri to gain regular first-team experience and continue his development at a competitive European club.

Benfica, meanwhile, will hope the Argentine can add creativity and attacking quality to their squad as they prepare for the new campaign.

The move is expected to be completed once Echeverri successfully passes his medical, with the option to make the transfer permanent in June 2027 giving Benfica a potential long-term route to secure his services.

For Manchester City, the arrangement provides Echeverri with valuable playing time while keeping the club involved in his future as he continues his journey towards establishing himself at the highest level of European football.
