A civil advocacy group, United Advocates Group, has urged the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, to replace the team investigating the death of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The group called for fresh officers who were not involved in the earlier investigation to handle the renewed probe, saying this would ensure transparency, independence and public confidence in the process.
In a statement signed by its legal adviser, Oluwatosin Afolabi, the group said the re-investigation, initiated in April 2025 following the intervention of the former Inspector-General of Police, had remained unresolved after being transferred to the Lagos State Police Command.
The group said fresh facts had prompted an Inspector-General’s investigative team to visit Lagos twice, raising issues that required further interrogation of relevant suspects.
It warned that assigning the case to officers who participated in the earlier investigation could undermine the credibility of the renewed process and deepen public distrust.
The group also alleged that one of the officers failed to pursue critical leads during the initial investigation, while another allegedly gave inconsistent accounts concerning his involvement in the case.
UAG urged the Lagos Police Commissioner to immediately appoint a new team at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, to conduct an independent and credible investigation into Mohbad’s death.
Mohbad died in September 2023 at the age of 27, with the circumstances surrounding his death generating widespread public concern and calls for justice.
