The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has said it remains on track to meet the milestones set out in its seven-week work plan for the proposed establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the working group and Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this in a statement, saying the group had moved from its initial organisational stage to substantive policy and legislative work.

According to him, the first drafting sprint for the proposed National Policing Bill has commenced, while the Policy Advisory Committee, chaired by retired Justice Mohammed Abdullahi Liman, has completed the first stage of its oversight responsibilities.

He added that legal drafters nominated by the Federal Ministry of Justice had also begun work in line with the approved timetable.

Gbajabiamila said the national consultation process had attracted contributions from institutions, professional bodies, civil society organisations, security stakeholders, experts and members of the public.

The extended deadline for submission of memoranda and position papers is Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5pm. The working group said submissions received are being reviewed and analysed as the drafting process continues.

The proposed National Policing Bill is expected to provide the constitutional and legislative framework for a dual policing structure comprising a Federal Police Service and State Police Services, with safeguards, accountability measures and oversight mechanisms.

Gbajabiamila said the working group remained committed to producing a comprehensive legislative proposal for consideration by the President and eventual transmission to the National Assembly.
