Ogun youths torch two police stations after father of newborn is allegedly killed

Youths in Ifonyintedo, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, reportedly set fire to two police stations following the alleged killing of a man, Owolabi Oniyiku, at a police checkpoint in the community.

Oniyiku, said to have become a father only two days before the incident, was reportedly returning from Ilashe when he was allegedly shot by police officers manning a makeshift checkpoint. Sources said he was unarmed when he was killed.

The incident reportedly sparked outrage among residents and youths in the community. Following the alleged shooting, some youths were said to have carried Oniyiku’s remains to a police station, where tension escalated.

The youths subsequently attacked and set fire to two police stations in the area, according to reports. The development caused panic among residents and heightened tension in the community.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain subject to investigation, while authorities are expected to establish what led to the confrontation at the checkpoint and the subsequent destruction of police facilities.

The incident has renewed concerns over alleged abuses at checkpoints and the need for restraint and accountability in maintaining law and order.
