SK Hynix is planning a major share buyback worth about $28.6 billion as it moves to support shareholder value following a sharp decline in its stock price.
The South Korean semiconductor giant plans to repurchase and cancel approximately 40 trillion won ($28.6 billion) worth of its own shares. The move represents one of the company’s largest efforts to return capital to investors and comes as concerns over high AI infrastructure spending weigh on technology stocks.
The buyback is expected to cover about 24 million shares, or roughly 3.3% of SK Hynix’s outstanding shares. The company plans to conduct the repurchase between August 20 and November 19, 2026.
SK Hynix has benefited significantly from strong demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, which are critical components in AI data centres and advanced computing systems. However, recent market volatility has raised concerns about whether the rapid growth in AI investment can be sustained.
The company’s decision to use its strong cash position for the buyback signals confidence in its long-term prospects while seeking to reassure investors after the recent share-price decline.
With AI-related demand continuing to drive the global semiconductor industry, SK Hynix is positioning the buyback as both a shareholder-return initiative and a statement of confidence in the company’s future growth.
