President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President and elder statesman, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 85th birthday, describing him as a remarkable leader whose contributions have left a lasting imprint on Nigeria.
Babangida clocked 85 on August 17, 2026, with President Tinubu commending his military career and subsequent leadership of the country following the 1985 coup.
In a congratulatory message, Tinubu acknowledged Babangida’s significant influence on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical development during his eight year administration.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.
The President credited the former military leader with expanding the nation’s economy, developing infrastructure and establishing agencies and institutions that continue to contribute to national development.
Tinubu also praised Babangida’s role in the creation of states and other administrative structures, noting that his foresight and commitment to equity and fairness contributed significantly to Nigeria’s present geographical configuration.
According to the President, Babangida’s name and legacy will remain firmly established in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to the country’s development.
Tinubu further noted that Babangida had continued to contribute to national discourse even after leaving office, offering counsel and guidance from his residence in Minna, Niger State.
“His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” the President said.
Tinubu wished the former military President continued good health, strength and many more years, praying that Almighty Allah would continue to preserve him.
