The Enugu State Government has commenced construction of three new 33KV electricity feeders designed to improve power supply and address prolonged outages across four local government areas of the state.
The new feeders will serve communities in Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Awgu and Aninri Local Government Areas, as the state intensifies efforts to expand electricity infrastructure and improve reliability of power supply.
The project is part of the state government’s broader efforts to address electricity challenges and create a more reliable power environment for households, businesses and industries.
The construction is expected to increase the capacity of the distribution network serving the affected communities and reduce pressure on existing feeders. This could help improve the quality and reliability of electricity available to residents and businesses within the four local government areas.
Electricity shortages have remained a major challenge for businesses across Nigeria, with manufacturers, small businesses and service providers often relying on generators and alternative power sources to maintain operations. The high cost of alternative energy has increased operating expenses and placed additional pressure on consumers.
For Enugu, improving electricity supply is particularly important as the state seeks to attract investment, expand industrial activity and strengthen its local economy.
The state has also been pursuing other electricity initiatives aimed at increasing access to reliable and affordable power. In June, Enugu signed grant agreements under the Renewable Energy Development for State Electricity Market project, which is expected to support solar mini grids in underserved communities.
The new 33KV feeders will complement such efforts by strengthening the conventional electricity distribution network while renewable energy projects expand access in communities that remain underserved.
The project also comes amid increasing attention to the performance of electricity distribution infrastructure in Enugu. Earlier this year, the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission conducted technical and safety audits of major injection substations operated by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited following complaints about reduced supply hours.
Improving feeder infrastructure is expected to help address some of the technical constraints affecting electricity distribution while providing additional capacity for communities experiencing rising electricity demand.
Reliable electricity remains essential to economic development because businesses depend on stable power to reduce production costs, improve productivity and remain competitive.
For households, better supply could reduce dependence on petrol and diesel generators, lowering energy costs and improving living conditions.
The state government’s investment in electricity infrastructure therefore represents an important component of its broader economic development strategy. Successful completion of the three feeders could provide immediate relief to communities affected by prolonged outages while supporting commercial and industrial activities.
The project also demonstrates the growing role of state governments in Nigeria’s evolving electricity market following reforms that have given states greater opportunities to participate in electricity generation, distribution and regulation.
As construction progresses, residents and businesses in Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Awgu and Aninri will be watching closely for the completion of the project and the expected improvement in electricity supply.
