Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia has disclosed that a number of Nigerian nationals remain in Saudi prisons despite completing their jail terms because they have been unable to pay court-imposed fines.
The envoy explained that while the affected individuals have served the custodial aspect of their sentences, their release has been delayed due to outstanding financial penalties required under Saudi law. He noted that the situation has become a significant concern for the Nigerian mission, which continues to engage relevant Saudi authorities on the matter.
According to the ambassador, the embassy is working to provide consular support to the affected citizens while exploring lawful avenues to facilitate their release. He also urged Nigerians living or travelling abroad to respect the laws of their host countries to avoid legal complications.
The envoy reaffirmed the mission’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Nigerian citizens in Saudi Arabia and pledged to continue diplomatic engagements aimed at resolving the issue in accordance with the country’s legal framework.
The revelation has renewed calls for greater awareness among Nigerians abroad about the legal and financial consequences of criminal convictions in foreign jurisdictions, as well as the importance of complying with local laws.
