Residents of a community hosting the Gurara Dam in Kaduna State have decried the persistent lack of electricity and access to potable water despite living close to one of the country’s major hydro infrastructure projects.
Community members expressed concern over what they described as years of neglect, noting that while the dam contributes to national development, the host community continues to grapple with inadequate basic amenities, including reliable electricity and clean water.
According to residents, the absence of these essential services has adversely affected households, businesses, healthcare delivery and educational activities, while increasing the hardship faced by the local population.
Community leaders appealed to the Federal Government, Kaduna State Government and relevant agencies to prioritise the provision of electricity, potable water and other critical infrastructure to improve living conditions in the area.
They stressed that host communities should benefit directly from projects located within their environment, urging authorities to address longstanding infrastructure deficits and promote inclusive development.
The residents expressed optimism that sustained government intervention and collaboration with relevant stakeholders would help improve access to essential services and enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the community.
