APM Terminals has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by organising a large scale clean up exercise at the Lagos Port, aimed at promoting a cleaner, safer and more environmentally responsible port environment.
The initiative brought together employees, port users, government agencies and other stakeholders to remove waste and improve sanitation within the port complex, underscoring the company’s focus on sustainable port operations.
According to APM Terminals, the exercise forms part of its broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, which prioritises responsible business practices, environmental protection and community engagement across its operations.
Company officials said maintaining a clean port environment is essential to improving operational efficiency, protecting marine ecosystems and ensuring a safe workplace for employees, port users and visitors.
They noted that effective waste management and environmental stewardship are becoming increasingly important as global shipping and logistics companies adopt more sustainable operating standards in response to climate and environmental challenges.
Industry stakeholders commended the initiative, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening environmental awareness within Nigeria’s maritime sector and encouraging other operators to embrace sustainable practices.
Experts observed that cleaner port environments contribute to improved cargo handling, reduced pollution and enhanced operational productivity while supporting Nigeria’s efforts to align with international environmental standards.
They also stressed the need for continuous collaboration between port operators, regulatory agencies and private sector organisations to sustain environmental protection initiatives and promote responsible waste management.
The clean up exercise complements ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, operational efficiency and environmental performance at Nigeria’s seaports as the country seeks to enhance its competitiveness in regional and global maritime trade.
Analysts believe sustained investment in environmental sustainability will strengthen the long term resilience of Nigeria’s ports, improve investor confidence and support the development of a more efficient and environmentally friendly maritime industry.
