A police officer and two other persons have been killed following an attack by suspected armed bandits on a community in Sokoto State, in the latest incident highlighting the persistent security challenges in parts of northwestern Nigeria.
According to security sources, the assailants stormed the village in large numbers, opening fire on residents and security personnel before fleeing the scene. The attack reportedly resulted in the death of a police officer who was responding to the incident, alongside two civilians caught in the violence.
Several residents were said to have sustained injuries during the raid, while properties were damaged as panic spread across the affected community. Local authorities have yet to confirm the full extent of the destruction, with assessments continuing.
Security operatives have launched a manhunt for the attackers, deploying additional personnel to the area to restore calm and prevent further assaults. Police authorities said investigations are ongoing and assured residents that efforts are being intensified to track down those responsible for the attack.
Community leaders called for increased security presence in vulnerable rural communities, noting that repeated attacks have disrupted farming activities, displaced families and heightened fears among residents. They urged the government to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve rapid response capabilities to tackle the activities of armed criminal groups.
Security analysts said the latest incident underscores the need for sustained collaboration among federal and state security agencies, local communities and traditional institutions to combat banditry. They stressed that improved surveillance, intelligence sharing and community policing would play a vital role in addressing the growing threat.
The attack adds to a series of security incidents recorded in parts of the Northwest, where authorities have continued to intensify operations against armed groups involved in banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
Residents have appealed for enhanced security measures to safeguard lives and property, expressing hope that the perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to justice.
