Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over Nigeria’s increasing debt profile, expressing concern about the country’s growing reliance on borrowing to finance government expenditure.

In a statement, Atiku argued that the pace of borrowing raises questions about fiscal sustainability and the long-term impact on the nation’s economy. He called on the Federal Government to prioritize prudent financial management, improve revenue generation, and ensure that borrowed funds are invested in projects capable of stimulating economic growth and creating jobs.

According to the former presidential candidate, excessive borrowing without corresponding economic returns could place a heavier financial burden on future generations and limit the government’s fiscal flexibility.

The criticism comes amid ongoing public debate over the administration’s economic policies, including efforts to fund infrastructure development, stabilize the economy, and implement key reforms.

The Tinubu administration has consistently maintained that its borrowing strategy is aimed at financing critical infrastructure and development projects, while emphasizing that loans are being secured within the country’s legal debt framework and are intended to support long-term economic growth.

The issue of public debt continues to generate mixed reactions among economists, policymakers, and political stakeholders, with differing views on the balance between financing development and maintaining debt sustainability.
