The Federal Government has said the implementation of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) policy is expected to accelerate agro-industrial development, strengthen agricultural value chains and promote increased investment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. The government said the initiative was designed to support the development of agro-processing industries by creating dedicated zones with the infrastructure and services needed to process agricultural produce and add value to locally produced raw materials.

According to the Federal Government, the SAPZ programme will help reduce post-harvest losses, improve access to markets and encourage the establishment of industries closer to major agricultural production areas. The initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities, increase farmers’ incomes and support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises operating within agricultural value chains.

The government noted that Nigeria has significant agricultural resources but continues to face challenges in processing, storage and value addition. It said the development of agro-industrial processing zones would help address these challenges by connecting farmers with processors, investors, logistics providers and other stakeholders.

The Federal Government added that the policy would encourage greater private-sector participation in agriculture and create an enabling environment for local and foreign investment. It said the provision of critical infrastructure within the zones would help reduce production costs and improve the competitiveness of agricultural products.

The government further explained that the SAPZ initiative would promote the processing of agricultural commodities within the country rather than relying heavily on the export of unprocessed raw materials. By expanding local processing capacity, the initiative is expected to support industrial growth, increase the value of agricultural exports and contribute to national economic development.

The Federal Government urged state governments, farmers, investors and development partners to support the effective implementation of the programme. It stressed that collaboration among stakeholders would be essential to ensuring that the benefits of the initiative reach farming communities and contribute to inclusive economic growth.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment to improving agricultural infrastructure, supporting value addition and strengthening food production across the country. The SAPZ policy forms part of broader efforts to transform agriculture from primarily small-scale production into a more modern, commercially driven and industrially connected sector.

With improved processing facilities, stronger market linkages and increased investment, the Federal Government said the initiative could help position agriculture as a major driver of industrialisation, job creation and sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
