Ikeja Electric Blames National Grid for Reduced Power Supply

Ikeja Electric Plc has attributed the reduction in electricity supply hours across its network to a shortfall in the amount of power allocated to it from the national grid.

The electricity distribution company disclosed this in a public notice issued on Monday, October 19, 2026, explaining that the reduced allocation had affected the number of hours customers received electricity across its service areas.

According to the company, the situation has caused inconvenience for households, businesses and other electricity consumers who depend on regular power supply for their daily activities.

Ikeja Electric said it understood the difficulties customers were experiencing and appealed for patience and understanding while efforts continued to improve the situation.

The company stated that it was engaging relevant stakeholders to address the supply constraints and increase the amount of electricity available to its network.

It also assured customers that the electricity received from the national grid would continue to be distributed as efficiently and equitably as possible.

The distribution company further promised to keep customers informed about developments concerning electricity supply across its operational areas.

The latest development comes amid persistent challenges affecting Nigeria’s electricity sector, where inadequate generation, transmission constraints and reduced allocations to distribution companies have contributed to unreliable power supply.

In August 2026, the Nigerian Independent System Operator attributed reduced electricity allocations to distribution companies serving Lagos, Abuja and parts of northern Nigeria to multiple transmission line outages that constrained the capacity of the national grid.

Reduced electricity supply has significant implications for businesses that depend on power to operate equipment, preserve goods and provide services. Households also face additional expenses when forced to rely on generators and alternative energy sources.

However, Ikeja Electric did not specify the exact quantity of electricity it had lost in its allocation or provide a timeline for when supply would improve.

Customers are therefore awaiting further information about the extent of the shortfall and the measures being taken to restore more reliable electricity supply.

The company reiterated its commitment to keeping consumers updated as discussions with relevant stakeholders continue.
