The Ebonyi State Government has warned that it will revoke the contracts for several 2-kilometre road projects awarded across the state if the affected contractors fail to meet agreed performance standards and project timelines.
The state government said the decision forms part of its efforts to ensure quality infrastructure delivery, enforce accountability and prevent unnecessary delays in the execution of public projects. Officials stressed that contractors handling government-funded projects must comply with contractual obligations or risk losing their contracts.
According to the government, ongoing inspections revealed that some contractors had either abandoned their sites or failed to make satisfactory progress despite receiving mobilisation and adequate time to execute the projects. Authorities said such delays undermine the state’s infrastructure development agenda and deny communities the benefits of improved road connectivity.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to completing road projects that will enhance transportation, boost economic activities and improve access to rural and urban communities. It emphasized that only competent and committed contractors would be allowed to continue executing public infrastructure projects.
Government officials also directed contractors to immediately return to their project sites and accelerate construction work in line with approved specifications and completion schedules. They warned that failure to comply would result in contract termination and the reassignment of the projects to more capable firms.
Infrastructure experts have welcomed the government’s tough stance, noting that strict contract monitoring is essential to improving the quality of public works and ensuring value for taxpayers’ money. They argued that timely completion of road projects supports commerce, reduces transportation costs and stimulates local economic development.
The road projects are part of Ebonyi State’s broader infrastructure development programme aimed at expanding road networks, improving connectivity and supporting socio-economic growth across the state. Residents in several communities have expressed optimism that stronger project supervision will lead to faster completion of the roads.
The government reiterated that it remains committed to transparency, accountability and efficient project delivery, assuring citizens that public resources would continue to be utilised for projects that deliver lasting benefits to the people of Ebonyi State.
