Indian climate activist Sonam Wangchuk says he has lost 11 kilograms after spending 26 days on a hunger strike, insisting he remains determined to continue his protest despite growing concerns over his health.

Wangchuk said, “I am still alive,” in a message to supporters, adding that his fast is aimed at drawing attention to environmental protection, democratic rights and greater constitutional safeguards for the Himalayan region of Ladakh.

The engineer and education reformer has been leading the hunger strike as part of a campaign calling for stronger legal protections for Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem and greater political representation following the region’s reorganisation in 2019. Supporters have staged demonstrations in solidarity with his demands.

Medical professionals monitoring Wangchuk said prolonged fasting poses serious health risks, including muscle loss, dehydration and organ complications. Despite the weight loss, the activist has continued to address supporters, saying he intends to maintain the protest until the government responds to key demands.

India’s federal government has not publicly commented on Wangchuk’s latest remarks but has previously said it remains committed to the development and welfare of Ladakh. Officials have held discussions with representatives from the region, though no breakthrough has been announced.

Wangchuk, internationally known for inspiring the character portrayed in the Bollywood film “3 Idiots,” has become one of India’s most prominent environmental campaigners, advocating for sustainable development and the preservation of Himalayan communities.
