The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has introduced a digital waste management system and completed major upgrades at one of its pilgrims’ terminals as part of ongoing efforts to improve airport operations, environmental sustainability and passenger experience.
The digital waste management initiative is designed to enhance sanitation across airport facilities through technology driven monitoring and efficient waste collection. The system is expected to improve cleanliness, ensure timely disposal of waste and support FAAN’s commitment to maintaining international aviation standards.
According to the authority, the new platform will enable airport managers to track waste collection schedules, monitor disposal activities in real time and optimise operational efficiency. The initiative also aligns with broader environmental sustainability goals aimed at reducing pollution and promoting cleaner airport environments.
In addition to the waste management project, FAAN has undertaken extensive renovations at its pilgrims’ terminal to provide a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for pilgrims embarking on religious journeys. The upgraded facility features improved passenger waiting areas, enhanced security infrastructure, better baggage handling systems and modern passenger processing equipment.
The improvements are expected to ease passenger movement during peak pilgrimage seasons while strengthening safety, convenience and operational efficiency. Airport officials noted that the modernisation reflects FAAN’s determination to provide facilities that meet the growing demands of air travellers.
The authority said the twin projects form part of a wider strategy to modernise airport infrastructure nationwide through the adoption of innovative technologies and continuous facility upgrades. FAAN added that investments in digital solutions and improved terminal infrastructure would contribute to more efficient airport management and higher service delivery standards.
Stakeholders in the aviation sector have welcomed the initiatives, describing them as positive steps toward improving Nigeria’s airport infrastructure and aligning operations with global best practices.
