A man accused of throwing an incendiary device at a federal building in New York City was carrying material expressing opposition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation.
According to Reuters, the suspect allegedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at a federal building in Lower Manhattan before being taken into custody. No fatalities were reported, and authorities said the fire was quickly extinguished, limiting damage to the building.
Sources told Reuters that investigators recovered anti ICE literature and other items from the suspect after his arrest. Officials are examining whether the attack was politically motivated or linked to broader anti-government or anti-immigration enforcement sentiments.
The investigation is being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the New York Police Department (NYPD). Authorities said they are also reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to establish the suspect’s movements before the attack.
Federal prosecutors are expected to pursue charges related to arson, the use of an incendiary device and the attempted destruction of government property. Officials have not released the suspect’s identity pending formal court proceedings.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions surrounding U.S. immigration enforcement and follows a series of protests and isolated attacks targeting federal facilities in recent months. Security has since been increased around government buildings in New York City as investigators assess whether the suspect acted alone.
Authorities urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues and appealed for anyone with information or video footage related to the incident to contact law enforcement.
