Outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered a farewell address outside 10 Downing Street on Friday, thanking the public for the opportunity to serve and urging the country to remain united as power transfers to a new government.

Starmer reflected on his time in office, highlighting his government’s efforts to strengthen the economy, improve public services and reinforce Britain’s international partnerships. He acknowledged the challenges his administration had faced, including economic pressures, global conflicts and domestic political divisions, while expressing confidence in the country’s future.

Standing outside the prime minister’s official residence, Starmer thanked his cabinet colleagues, civil servants, members of the armed forces and his family for their support during his tenure. He also paid tribute to communities across the United Kingdom, saying public service had been the greatest honour of his political career.

Starmer said he would formally tender his resignation to King Charles III, who would then invite the incoming prime minister to form a new government in accordance with constitutional convention. The change in leadership follows the outcome of the general election, which ushered in a new administration after a period of intense political competition.

The outgoing prime minister called on the public to support a peaceful and orderly transition of power, describing it as a defining strength of British democracy. He wished his successor success in leading the country through the economic, social and international challenges that lie ahead.

Following the speech, Starmer departed 10 Downing Street to travel to Buckingham Palace, where he was expected to formally submit his resignation to the King before the new prime minister was appointed.

The transfer of power marks another significant moment in British politics as the United Kingdom begins a new chapter under fresh leadership after years of political and economic uncertainty.
