Two U.S. military personnel were killed and several others wounded in an attack on a military installation in Jordan, the U.S. Department of Defense said, blaming the assault on Iranian backed militants amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The attack targeted a U.S. military facility near Jordan’s border with Syria, where American forces are deployed as part of operations against the Islamic State group. U.S. officials said the strike involved drones and other aerial weapons launched by groups backed by Iran.

The Pentagon confirmed that two service members died from their injuries, while several others were receiving medical treatment. Officials said an investigation was underway to determine the full circumstances of the attack and assess the extent of the damage.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth condemned the strike, describing it as a “cowardly attack” on American personnel. He said the United States would hold those responsible accountable and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to protecting its troops stationed across the region.

Iran denied direct involvement in the attack, maintaining that armed groups operating in the region act independently. However, U.S. officials said intelligence assessments indicate the assault was carried out by an Iranian backed militia, adding that Washington is considering its response in consultation with regional allies.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following a series of military exchanges and retaliatory strikes across the Middle East. Analysts warn that the latest incident could further increase the risk of a broader regional confrontation if diplomatic efforts fail to ease hostilities.

The United States maintains several military bases in Jordan, Iraq and Syria as part of its regional security mission and counterterrorism operations. Officials said additional measures are being taken to strengthen force protection while the investigation continues.
