The Kano State Government has empowered 1,900 butchers as part of a broader initiative to strengthen the livestock value chain and accelerate industrial development through the establishment of cottage industry hubs across the state.
The intervention, unveiled by the state government, is aimed at improving productivity in the meat processing sector, creating employment opportunities and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises as part of efforts to diversify the state’s economy.
Speaking during the empowerment programme, government officials said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to promoting inclusive economic growth by providing artisans and small business operators with the tools and support needed to expand their operations.
The beneficiaries, drawn from various local government areas, received equipment and other essential items expected to enhance meat processing, improve hygiene standards and increase efficiency within the sector.
The government also announced plans to establish cottage industry hubs that will serve as centres for production, skills acquisition, innovation and entrepreneurship. The hubs are expected to provide shared facilities for small-scale manufacturers and processors, reducing production costs while improving access to modern equipment and business support services.
According to the state government, the planned industrial hubs will cater to businesses involved in leather processing, textiles, food processing, agro allied activities and other value adding industries with the objective of boosting local production and reducing dependence on imported goods.
Officials said the initiative forms part of a long-term strategy to stimulate grassroots industrialisation, encourage entrepreneurship and create sustainable jobs, particularly for youths and women. They added that strengthening small businesses remains essential to achieving economic resilience and increasing internally generated revenue.
Beneficiaries commended the government for the intervention, describing it as timely and capable of improving their businesses. They expressed optimism that access to modern equipment and the proposed cottage industry hubs would increase productivity, enhance product quality and expand employment opportunities within their communities.
Economic analysts noted that supporting butchers and small-scale processors through targeted empowerment programmes could significantly improve the livestock value chain while encouraging investment in local industries. They added that the development of cottage industry hubs would provide a platform for innovation, value addition and wealth creation across the state.
The Kano State Government reaffirmed its commitment to implementing policies that promote industrial growth, support local enterprises and create a business-friendly environment capable of attracting investment and driving long-term economic development.
